Lifetime circumstances had left me as one who always wanted to be in control of my situations, and I was always a well organized, neat and tidy person.
The whiteface was definitely my cup of tea–always in contral, neat and pretty, the top of the heap. I practiced it a lot during the 1st 3 weeks. The Auguste was cute too. The Bag Lady left me cold. And I was absolutely, no way, going to be a Tramp/Hobo–sloppy, bottom of the heap at everyone else’s mercy–huh-unh, No Way! But I dutifully practiced it along with the Auguste and White Face. My family said I lit up and got goofy and seemed natural (GREAT!) as a Tramp (WHAT?!?). So, on pick night, I listened to the meditation for the first time with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. I didn’t start until the meditiation was over. I whispered a prayer, not my will, but Yours–but I’m going to be a white face. I picked up the white, and with every intention of becoming a white face, I put the white on my eyes. Well, every single time that I had practiced the white face, I started with the white on my forehead. When I started the Auguste, I put the white around my mouth first, when I practiced the Tramp, I put it on my eyes first. I broke into tears when I realized what I had done, then laughed that God was just so obvious and involved in my decision. I became a Tramp.
There have been times when I question it. My husband is terribly uncomfortable with me being a Tramp (an ugly clown, he says) even though he supports my clowning 100%. He’s my biggest fan–but he wonders why I couldn’t have been a pretty clown. And the transgender thing was hard at first. But, I am OSCAR, the Tramp. My kids even plan on having my grandkids call me Grandma Oscar. And everyone seems to love OSCAR when he visits. And, God doesn’t make mistakes. I’m blessed to be OSCAR.

Well my choice was pretty easy…Since I have had facial hair since I was 17 and I have never thought to shave it, that made the decision very easy. Of course having Red Skelton and Emmett Kelly being my two favorite clowns was a help in my choice also.

I took the Smiles Unlimited classes in 1993 in Plainfield, IN. I had been a teacher and storyteller already for 20 years. I had taken a balloon animal class and a fellow Scouter had worked with me on polishing my techniques. I was already using a chef’s apron for my balloon, one pocket for each color.
I saw the article about clown classes in a Hendricks Co. newspaper on a rainy Sunday afternoon and went over out of curiosity.
I met David Ragsdale, “Rags” the Clown from Mooresville who was in make up. By the end of the first day knew I was going to be a hobo because I hadn’t shaved since the last day of school in 1977 and I wasn’t going to start just because of clown makeup. Ski briefly mentioned developing a clown character. I knew I could develop the cook’s apron into a clown costume and a hobo – character clown would be best suited for it.
Two of my former students, their mom & our school secretary & daughter and niece were in the class. We met outside of class and discussed the class and possible names. I suggested Peanut Butter for one of the younger students. I couldn’t come up with a name for myself and took the name Peanut Butter when she took “Sweet Tart”. I knew I wanted a name that would stick with you. I’m sort of clumsy and Peanut Butter is a slightly more polite name than “Butter Fingers” and I didn’t really want to be named after a candy bar.
Late on I met another clown named “Mr. Good News”. He and Rags again emphasized becoming a clown with a personality. Develop a background, family & life story. That has come gradually which I will share in another blog.
